Trezor.io/start — Get Started with Your Trezor Device

🚀 Trezor.io/Start | Starting Up Your Trezor Device

The official Trezor start process guides you through setting up your device using the Trezor Suite application. This process ensures your device is genuine, your firmware is current, and your vital Recovery Seed is secured offline.

Time required: Approximately 15 minutes.

What You'll Need

  • Your Trezor hardware wallet and the included USB cable.

  • The provided Recovery Seed cards and a pen.

  • A desktop computer (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

  • A stable internet connection.

Step 1: Download and Connect

  1. Visit the Official Start Page: Navigate to the official start portal: trezor.io/start.

  2. Download Trezor Suite: Choose your device model and download the Trezor Suite desktop application. Always download directly from the official website to avoid phishing and ensure you get the latest, most secure version.

  3. Install and Launch: Run the installer and open Trezor Suite. If you are prompted about a security warning, verify the publisher is "Trezor Company s.r.o." and proceed.

  4. Connect Your Device: Plug your Trezor into your computer using the USB cable. Trezor Suite should automatically detect the device.

Step 2: Authenticity Check and Firmware Installation

  1. Verify Integrity: Before proceeding, check the device packaging for any signs of tampering or damage. If the holographic seal on the USB port (Model One/T) or the device's physical integrity looks compromised, do not use it and contact Trezor support immediately.

  2. Install Firmware: Your Trezor device is shipped without firmware pre-installed as an extra security measure. Trezor Suite will prompt you to install the latest official firmware. Click Install firmware and confirm the action.

Step 3: Create Your Wallet and Recovery Seed

This is the most critical step. Your Recovery Seed (also known as a seed phrase) is the master key to your crypto assets. It allows you to restore your entire wallet on a new device if your Trezor is ever lost, stolen, or damaged.

  1. Create New Wallet: In Trezor Suite, select Create new wallet.

  2. Backup Type: Choose between Standard seed backup (12 or 24 words, depending on the model) or, for advanced security, Advanced Shamir Backup (a multiple-share system).

  3. Record Your Seed: The Recovery Seed words will be displayed ONLY on your Trezor device's screen.

    • NEVER take a digital copy of these words (no photos, screenshots, or typing them on a computer).

    • Write the words down exactly in order on the provided Recovery Seed cards.

    • Verify the backup when prompted by the device, which ensures you recorded it correctly.

  4. Store Safely: After verification, store your physical Recovery Seed card(s) in a secure, fireproof, and off-site location.

Step 4: Set Your PIN

A Personal Identification Number (PIN) protects your Trezor from unauthorized physical access if someone gets ahold of your device.

  1. Set PIN: Click Continue to PIN in Trezor Suite, then Set PIN.

  2. Enter on Trezor: You will enter the PIN directly on the Trezor device (using the buttons or touchscreen). The arrangement of numbers is randomized on the computer screen/device each time to prevent keylogging attacks.

  3. Confirm: Enter the PIN a second time for confirmation. We recommend using a PIN of at least 4 digits.

Once the PIN is set, your device setup is complete! You can name your device and select which cryptocurrencies you wish to activate in the Trezor Suite interface.

❓ Setup and Security FAQ

Q: Where can I find my private keys?

A: Your private keys are stored on the Trezor device and never leave it. They are protected by your PIN. The Recovery Seed (24 words, etc.) is the only backup of these keys.

Q: Do I need to worry about the computer I use for setup?

A: While the Trezor is designed to be safe even on an infected computer (since the critical signing happens on the device's trusted display), it is best practice to use a clean, trusted computer for the initial setup to ensure a smooth download of Trezor Suite.

Q: Can I use my Trezor without installing Trezor Suite?

A: Trezor Suite is the recommended interface for managing your wallet, as it includes the necessary Trezor Bridge components and offers the best user experience. While some third-party wallets support Trezor, installing Trezor Suite is the fastest and most secure way to initialize and update your device.

Q: What is a Passphrase (25th Word)?

A: A Passphrase is an optional, extra word you can add to your Recovery Seed to create a hidden, separate wallet. It provides an extreme layer of security. However, if you forget your Passphrase, your funds are permanently lost. It is an advanced feature and should be used only if you fully understand the risks.
